How to be successful when applying for a scholarship

  1. To access all the scholarships you qualify for, make sure to answer the eligibility questions with accurate information.
  2. Essay questions are the most important part of the scholarship application because your answers are the only way the evaluation committee can get to know who you are. Reviewers want to see how students are able to connect their personal achievements to future goals and how the scholarship will help you to achieve them. Strong scholarship essays include moments or details that make us feel connected to you and want to root for you.
  3. Use the essay question to inform the scholarship reviewers about your unique situation and why you should be chosen to receive the scholarship.
  4. Provide all the information requested. Sometimes the difference between getting a scholarship and not getting one is incomplete or unclear information.
  5. Check your spelling and punctuation.
  6. Check the criteria for the scholarship and speak to the reason the scholarship was formed. Be thorough in providing your information.
  7. Don’t forget to ask for letters of recommendation. It is common courtesy to notify your recommender that you have asked for their support.  Request letters of recommendation early to allow plenty of time for responses. Check your application frequently and send a polite reminder if necessary.  Your application will be considered incomplete if the required two letters of recommendation have not been received.
